The Making of a Product: A Delve Into What Inspired Blissful

What exactly goes into launching a new Henné product? A beautiful blend of exploration, inspiration, examination, formulation, lots of trial and error, triumphs and hurdles, elation and frustration, breakthroughs…and then finally the big reveal. Each step of the way could be a blog post in itself, but today I want to share the creative process and inspiration behind Blissful, a product that brings a smile to my lips every time I put it on.

An ode to Wilmington

beach in Wilmington
In late summer of 2020, we relocated from Las Vegas to the charming coastal city of Wilmington. We had decided in 2019 to move there and obviously hadn’t anticipated moving in the midst of Covid but somehow we managed, and I’m so glad we did. With the stunning, vast ocean and coasts and easy access to lush nature, I quickly fell in love with our new home (and Henné home base). The hubby and I headed to the beach every chance we got, trying to soak up every bit of the ocean magic that we had desperately missed during those years in the Vegas desert. Even throughout the colder months when most people avoided the beach, we’d bundle up in our winter coats with coffees in tow and watch the sunrise in the early hours of the morning.

A few months prior to the big move, I hadn’t been planning on launching new lip tint shades. I was content with our small but well curated lineup of colors, but the months that followed sparked something in me. I knew there were two colors that needed to be a part of the Henné collection, all thanks to the newfound love for this city that brought a much-needed breath of fresh air back into our lives. Blissful and Sunlit launched in spring of 2021 and both pay homage to those splendid, golden hours by the sea that have brought me so much joy, serenity and comfort.

Moments of bliss

picnic with wine and bread
Wilmington was the main inspiration behind Blissful but there were a few other components that also played a role in the creation of this delightful, raspberry hued tint. Blissful evokes the best summer memories in my mind. Those long nights that turned into early mornings filled with laughter, intimate and vulnerable moments and conversations that I’ll never forget. Lazy Sunday afternoon picnics in the park in Stockholm with cheese, fresh bread from the bakery next door to where I worked, and a delicious bottle of rosé. That first bite of a creamy gelato or sweet and tart sorbet on a hot, humid day. Pure bliss.

The cinema

Still from Before Sunrise film
Music and film always play a role in my creative process with any product I launch. When it came to Blissful, two films stuck out to me the most: Before Sunrise and Before Sunset by Richard Linklater. If you’ve already had the pleasure of watching these two films, then I’m sure you can deduce why I took inspiration from them for Blissful. If you haven’t yet watched Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, I highly recommend you add it to your list. There’s no better time than this summer to experience them for the first time…or in my case to rewatch them.

When it’s just right

poster with lagom word and definition
When we were formulating Blissful, one Swedish word kept popping into my head: lagom. This popular Swedish word (and concept) means “not too much, not too little” or “just right” and describes the shade Blissful down to a tee. Not too red, not too pink. Not too faint, not too strong. Just right and simply perfect.
