The Ultimate Lip Care Guide

All of us have experienced dry, cracked lips at some point. Whether it was from too much fun in the sun or too many days of brutally cold, frigid temperatures, we all know that dry lips are extremely uncomfortable and oftentimes painful.

For some of you out there though, this isn’t a one-off but rather a chronic issue that you’ve struggled with for years, sometimes even decades. From dry flakes to soreness to bleeding, it can be a constant struggle and cause of discomfort. Damaged lips are also more prone to infection, since bacteria can penetrate more easily through the cracks.

Why Do Lips Get Dry?

It’s easy to pinpoint the cause of dry lips most of the time, such as exposure to cold weather. Sometimes it’s much harder to figure out though, and dryness could be the result of a slow progression due to underlying health issues.

While there are plenty of reasons why we get dry lips, these are the most common causes:

• Dehydration
• Weather (sun, cold, wind, low humidity)
• Licking lips
• Matte lipsticks and other cosmetics that dry out lips
• Medications
• Illnesses
• Genetics can also play a role

The good news is that most causes are preventable. By making small adjustments to some of your habits and the products that you use, your lips will look and feel significantly better in just a matter of days.

How to Treat and Prevent Dry Lips

Before we get into what to do, here are a few things not to do:

• Don't lick or bite your lips. This is one of the most common causes of dry lips, and even though it can be somewhat counteracted by your good habits, it's a big no-no for great looking lips. At the very least, try to scale your lip licking back to a bare minimum.

• Avoid too much exposure to sun, wind and cold temperatures.

• Stop (at least temporarily) using any products on your lips that make them dryer. This includes lipstick and many conventional lip balms that often contain petroleum-derived ingredients that are bad for your lips' long-term health despite the immediate relief you feel when applying them.

Now that you know what you shouldn't be doing, let's focus on what actions you can take to transform your dry lips into that soft, gorgeous pout you've always wanted. We've put together a simple and highly effective lip care plan for you and to make it super easy to remember, we've coined it "The HENNE Method".

The HENNE Method

Hydrate

Like so many other issues, health starts from within. If your body is constantly dehydrated, your lips will suffer as well, so drink plenty of water. No need to overdo it, but make sure you drink enough to avoid thirst. For most people, around a gallon of water a day is a great target. If you live in a place with a dry climate, you might also want to invest in a humidifier for your home.

Exfoliate

Get rid of dead skin that can't be brought back to life. Dead, flaky skin prevents your lips from healing properly and increases the chances of bleeding, sore lips. Exfoliating 3-4 times per week is a great starting point. If you have sensitive lips (or rarely notice any dead skin), cut it back to 1-2 days per week, which is enough to maintain a flake-free pout.

Nourish Nightly

Evenings, right before bed, are the perfect time for that extra lip care. Put on a thin layer of lip serum every night (and morning before lip balm for extra benefits), wait a couple of minutes for the serum to fully absorb, and then apply a thick layer of lip mask 3-4 times per week. Leave the mask on for 15-30 minutes for a deep, nourishing treatment. The perfect time would be to get your nightly nourishing routine in right after exfoliation when your lips are prepped for optimal absorption. If you don’t have time to leave the mask on that long, even as little as five minutes can make a difference.

Encapsulate

Lock moisture in and keep dryness away with lip balm. You want this protective layer to be the last thing you put on before getting into bed. Also, be sure to top up when needed throughout the day, especially after meals.
