She was born on a S.F. street corner, delivered by a ‘random dude.’ 30 years later, they finally met.

Up until Wednesday morning, Patrick Combs had not seen Searcy Hughes since the day she was born, June 29, 1988, an occasion noted on the front page of the next morning’s Chronicle.

“S.F. student delivers baby on sidewalk on his way to work” was the headline.

“Searcy,” Combs called out, as if recognizing her before dashing across Hayes Street to meet Hughes for a long embrace in front of some bewildered tourists looking for the Painted Ladies.

A ‘guard cat’ named Bandit helped prevent a late-night armed robbery

A Mississippi man said his pet cat helped prevent a robbery at his home, and he credits the calico with possibly saving his life.

Bandit, a 20-pound (9.1-kilogram) cat, lives with her retired owner, Fred Everitt, in the Tupelo suburb of Belden.

Want to live longer? Science says to read more books.

There are few joys greater than curling up and reading a good book. The best books are the ones that are so engrossing you forget that you’re reading. Then, when you take a break, you look and see you’ve blown through 50 pages without realizing it.

However, there are a lot of us who wish that we read more often, but we watch TV instead because it takes less mental energy. But the benefits of reading seem to be far greater.
